7 The Pearl Islands Episode 1 air date 9-18-03 recap

This
is my 3rd season watching Survivor. I initially resisted
but gave in and watched Survivor 5 Thailand two seasons
ago and loved it (hated to admit it at first). Subsequently
I have watched Survivor 6 The Amazon and I am now a
full fledged Survivor addict! Survivor is without question
the best reality TV show out there and possibly the
best show on TV period!
In
true addict form I was already scanning the web for
Survivor 7 before the season began and caught a few
of the teasers (see video clips) on Extra etc. so I
knew a little about what to expect from Survivor The
Pearl Islands.
While
it usually takes a few episodes for me to know the
characters and get into the program I was immediately
drawn in with the 90 min. season opener of Survivor
7. It was a great season opener and I can’t wait
for the next episode.
After
the show gives us the introductory stuff (see video
clip) we join host Jeff Probst as the boat anchors.
He welcomes us and tells us “the game is on – we’re
starting right now”. Horrified faces on the various
castaways let us know this is a real twist. 
Introduction
to Survivor 7 Pearl Islands

These survivors
will not be allowed to go through their luggage and
pick out a few essential items. Laughter.
They’re going into this game with only the clothes
on their backs as if they were really shipwrecked. Only
exception was their tennis shoes which he removed from
their luggage. He then asked for personal items, jewelry
or other important items they do not want to lose.
The survivors were well dressed for the most part as
they expected this to be a press day. Suits and dresses.
They
are separated into 2 tribes. Drake and Morgan tribes.
Off they go to walk the plank.
They swim to shore and must use the money that Jeff
gave them to buy essential items. They have a limited
amount of time to buy stuff and then obtain a boat with
the remaining money. Village locals make for some colorful
interaction as they try to get a boat and find survival
items.
First character
to really reveal himself is Rupert, the hefty tie dye
shirt dude in the Drake tribe with
the big sized body and full grown pirate beard. Rupert
was wiped out from the swim. Must not be as strong as
he looks. Certainly does not have the longevity. He immediately
took upon the role of a pirate and he stole Morgan’s
items which were set down next to them, including their
shoes and he went off to trade them for survival items.
I’d say points off for him but hey this is a pirate
them and he just played the role. I do wonder how the
other tribe will do without their shoes??? Lets’s
see if they mysteriously have them at the future challenges.
We see both tribes scrambling to gather good essential
type stuff. The spanish speaking gal Sandra saved the
day as she could speak the language of the locals which
helped them to bargain and gather some prime goods. It
looks like the Drake tribe got more good stuff.
Soon they are off on their boats and heading to their
respective islands. We see the Morgan tribe arriving
to their island. They are scrambling to set up camp.
Ryan S sitting and relaxing complains to the camera that
the fellow tribe mates did not take any time to celebrate
their new home. Hmmm... He also dissed Osten the buff
black dude for having mondo muscles. Ryan S is not off
to a good start. He immediately comes of as weak and
lacking energy.
His Morgan
tribe mates were in game mode and were working on the
fire and looking for a place to set down the camp.
Lillian the Boy Scout Leader was hard at work digging
a hole in the sand in her boy scout master uniform. She
is representing! The tribe sets up their shelter along
the shale rock wall. Not a good spot but hey they didn’t
seem to notice.
We
now see the Drake tribe arriving on the shore. They
are celebrating more. They are more relaxed but are soon
building their shelter. They seemed to be working together
very well. We meet some of the tribe mates. Quirky Christa
was really tired. Sandra was upset that Burton opened
up a coconut and only shared it with select others. You
can tell Sandra is the bitchy type.
Trish
says the strong guys have already alienated them. Rupert
complains that the dynamic duo of Shawn and Burton
is taking too much of a lead role and that they’re
making everyone hate them. I think he resents them having
boundless energy. The tribe finds their water which is
infested with mosquitoes. They are all complaining about
getting eatin’ alive by the squeters. Jon is braggin’ that
he is getting bitten the least (cause he has longer sleeves
and long pants on).
Back to the
Morgan tribe day 1 as they discover they are running
out of water (the bottles they brought with).
They discuss finding water and we see them bumbling around
searching for it. They find an orange stream. They can’t
drink it. The wander around.
Morgan Night
1 – snakes are crawling and the shale
of the cliff be fallin’ on them. Crabs are grabbing
the girls butts. Bad spot to set camp. Butt biting crabs.
No sleep for the Morgan tribe. Osten freaked out thinking
he saw a snake but it was a palm in the wind. The others
diss him for being so scared.
Drake Night
1 – they’re boozing it up with
moonshine. Jon is acting like an idiot. He just won’t
shut up. Talking shit. Rupert is ragging on Jon being
a dufus. But Jon thinks he is funny and that will make
him win the game. Reminds me of a bad Disk Jockey on
the radio that thinks he is funny and laughs overtime
at his own jokes.
Drake Day
2 – they’re all soaking wet. They
talk of not buying clothes in the village. Rupert was
wearing his“dress jeans”... I’d hate
to see him in his knock around casual pants... Funny
but Rupert reminds me of actor Jack Black in a strange
way,
but not as energetic or funny. They make shoes from palm
leaves. They make clothes from what they have. They cut
up the Armani pants into shorts. They will dry quicker.
Christa and Rupert and Michelle had a fashion club meeting
and cut up the dresses and such. Jon called Rupert “Black
Beard” actually
kinda funny.
Morgan Tribe
Day 2 – they are still complaining
about needing water. Tijuana finds that there is a water
well on the map. Duh! Haven’t any of them ever
watched Survivor before??? They make excuses of being
too busy to look on the map for water.
Andre explains their new construction project for a
new shelter. Lillian and Ryan S bond as they go to find
the water. They are so happy. Lillian says Ryan S was
a good kid and her buddy.
Drake tribe - Burton gets the spear gun and goes out
to nail a fish with Shawn. They grill the fish. But Rupert
knew that one fish would not be enough. He took the spear
and started catching more fish. He was thrilled. He kept
on going. Shawn points out that Rupert worked his ass
off but that he was now beat and that it took him hours
to recover from that. Rupert also had a wicked burn.
Rupert tells the camera he came out to be the caretaker
so that no one thinks they can get along without him.
Morgan Day
3 – First Mail in the Treasure Chest.
Guess it’s not tree mail. First challenge is of
brains and brawn. Ryan S says that the first time that
Andrew gave the presence of a leader that no one challenged
it. The group selects Andrew as the leader before the
challenge. Austin is having difficulty keeping his shorts
up. Ryan and Andrew said that if his shorts fall down
they will do the same. That’s what I call caring
and sharing.
The challenge. Pirates had to protect their loot. Transportation
of artillery along a jungle course. Winner gets immunity.
A skull on a stick. Losers have to eject someone.
Drake tribe is leading. They are just pushing. Pants
come off and some guys are nude. Morgan is carrying the
canon and pushing the thang. Drake lost the lead. Morgan
takes the lead. Drake tribe comes back and makes it to
the finish line first and wins immunity.
Morgan will have to be at tribal council and pick someone
that has to go home.
Drake
day 3. They make fun of the jones hanging out in the
challenge by the Morgan tribe. Sandra wanted their
ding a lings to get stuck on a vine.
Morgan day
3. Andrew says it sucks they lost. They chat and say
that Ryan S wasn’t giving his all. Andrew
wants to get rid of Lillian or Ryan S. Nicole tells Lillian
she wants to get rid of Tijuana. Lillian tells the others
and they don’t like she wanted to get rid of Tijuana.
Andrew tells Tijuana and she wigs. Tijuana confronts
Nicole and angrily lets her know she doesn’t trust
Nicole. Nicole handles it badly.
Andrew says
the people at risk are “skinny Ryan”,
Nicole for being dishonest, and Lillian is a contender
to be voted out.
Welcome to
the first Tribal Council. The torches are burning and
the jungle music is playing. Only Survivor
can pull off the tribal council concept like this. Jeff
Probst gets the Morgan tribe members to light the torches
and have a seat. Jeff asks if they have any regrets about
getting naked and losing. Nicole opens her mouth and
says enough to bury herself. She talks about not trusting
herself. Andrew says Ryan didn’t pull his weight
at the challenge. Ryan S responds and says he gave 120
percent. That means his 120% is weak.
Time to vote.
The votes are tallied. Once the votes are read the
decision is final. First vote Nicole. 2nd
vote Ryan. Nicole. Nicole. That’s 3 for Nicole.
A 4th. First person voted out of the Pearl Islands Nicole.
The tribe has spoken. Nicole splits. 36 more days to
go.
